Intel Donation to Help Improve K-12 Science and Math Teaching in California

Intel Foundation Grants $2 Million to University of California Education Initiative

The Intel Foundation in May 2005, announced a $2 million grant to the University of California in support of California Teach, an initiative to help improve science and math education in the state.

"The average performance of our students in science and mathematics is an alarming problem," said Intel Chairman Craig Barrett. "The issue is one of competitiveness. To remain the world leader in technology with a vibrant and growing economy, we need to substantially upgrade our science and math instruction so our children become the architects of tomorrow's great innovations and technologies. The collaboration between business and government on the California Teach initiative represents a good first step toward improving science and math education."

The University of California initiative, "California Teach, 1000 Teachers, 1 Million Minds," will enhance the supply and preparation of science and mathematics teachers, with a goal of providing 1,000 highly qualified science and math teachers into California public schools each year starting in 2010.
